My passion as a therapist is utilizing somatic (body based) approaches. I work with adult clients on issues of stress, anxiety, and relationship concerns all the time, and support those who are facing major life challenges, including loss of loved ones and traumatic experiences. Regardless of a client's history or current circumstance, my goal is to reduce stress and overwhelm in the nervous system, and increase a sense of stability and well-being overall.
I utilize Somatic Experiencing, Somatic Touch, and Somatic Focused EMDR approaches in my work.
When under threat, humans respond to keep themselves safe, mostly through fight, flight or freeze responses. These events can happen once (a scary incident like a car accident or natural disaster), or last a long time (living with someone who is abusive). When the threat is too big or sticks around too long, these natural survivals patterns can be stuck on overdrive, preventing the person to come back to neutral in their body and mind, even when the threat is over.
Somatic psychotherapy works to shift those rigid defensive patterns, supporting the body's natural desire for regulation, safety and well-being.
Somatic Experiencing, pioneered by Dr. Peter Levine, is a naturalistic form of healing that helps release physiological activation from the body. Very often this process reduces symptoms of stress in the nervous system and helps stabilize the body and mind.
I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, a Somatic Experiencing Assistant, and an Approved SE Session Provider at the Beginning Level. I receive ongoing Master level training and consultation in this modality.
For those enrolled in Somatic Experiencing studies, I am an Approved Session Provider at the Beginning Level.
If you are interested in completing some or all of your individual session requirements with me, please email or call me to discuss scheduling options. I can provide SE sessions virtually without having to place you on my wait list for new clients.
Somatic Touch Therapy is particularly helpful in addressing early childhood trauma. Since early overwhelming experiences occur before language, reasoning, and higher brain functioning are fully developed, people usually have indications that "something feels wrong with me", but don't have a full sense of why. Somatic Touch Support works in these non-verbal, implicit somatic channels, and often increases regulation and capacity, bringing more lasting change for a person.
Through Kathy Kain, MA, SEP, and Stephen Terrell, PsyD, SEP, I am trained in Touch Skills for Trauma, Somatic Resilience and Regulation, and TEB Touch modalities. These approaches utilize somatic touch, resiliency, awareness building, and self-regulation skills. I am also currently studying the Tao of Trauma modality with Alaine Duncan, LAc, SEP to better integrate Asian Medicine's Five Element theory with Somatic Touch work for trauma treatment.
